Definitely a minefield! Especially with the courses to do, because I want to make sure I do the right one and I’m restricted to online or a hybrid course where you don’t have to be on campus so much. Also, it has to be one that’s credible and I’m having difficulty with finding that out too!
I love Hattie’s podcast and have listened to some of them more than once particularly the one with George Saunders, who’s is the only other paid subscription I have on Substack. I haven’t heard of that podcast so will take a look thank you.
I will leave you alone now and look forward to Sunday!
I'm in the same boat. They have to be online, for now. Too many family obligations, to do otherwise.
Yes, I listen to Hattie's over again too. I love hearing other writer's experiences. Makes me feel like whichever way works is good so long as it works for you. Much more flexible!
Thank you for this! 😊 I am also trying to be more disciplined with my writing, I like that you have set aside a day for Substack and I should do the same. I find that I am getting too easily distracted and quite overwhelmed with all of the information out there. I look forward to reading your post, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that.
I was reading the comments on Hattie Crisel’s post about whether to do an MA and found your comment helpful and wanted to see if you’d written anymore about that topic. That’s how I stumbled across your posts and I enjoyed reading them!
Would you consider doing another post about what writing courses you’ve done and whether you found them useful or not? I have been considering doing one or more for a while now but am really not sure which to do. I was intrigued by the online courses at Oxford University, and I’d be very interested to learn more about how you found them.
That’s a good idea. I can do that. And thank you for reading my posts! I’ll post one on Sunday, which is my Substack day. The rest of the week is books writing. I’m trying to teach myself to be more disciplined. One outcome of doing the courses.

Hi Michelle,
You are more than welcome. It is a bit of a minefield out there, for sure!
One of the podcasts I listen to, along with Hattie’s, is The Book Editor show. I have found them to be immensely helpful.
Have fun
Ann
